Akktive was founded by professional athlete and big wave world champion surfer Keala Kennelly, driven by a simple mission: to create high-performance boardshorts for women that match the quality and functionality of men’s boardshorts, with a fit tailored specifically for women.

As a lifelong surfer, Keala Kennelly spent her career wearing men's boardshorts because women’s options were often made from subpar materials, cut poorly, and too short, leading to discomfort and thigh rash. After years of frustration and advocating for better designs within major surf brands, she decided to take matters into her own hands.

At the same time, Keala Kennelly is a proud member of the LGBTQ community and an inspiring activist who has dedicated her life to breaking boundaries. In a world that once said, "Women can't surf big waves," she proved them wrong by becoming the first woman to win an open gender category at the XXL Big Wave awards beating all the best male big wave surfers that year. Akktive embodies that same spirit of defying limits.
